What is CUI?

CUI (Unique Registration Code) is a unique numeric code assigned to each company upon registration with the Trade Register. It is issued by the Ministry of Public Finance through ANAF and serves as the company's tax identifier in Romania.

The CUI can have between 2 and 10 digits and is used in all tax documents: invoices, tax returns, commercial contracts. The prefix "RO" is added only when the company is a VAT payer (e.g., RO12345678).

Through the CUI you can find public information about a company: name, registered office address, whether it is a VAT payer, whether it applies Split VAT, or if it is in insolvency proceedings.

Difference between CUI, CIF, and Registration Number

CUI (Unique Registration Code)

The company's tax code, consisting of digits (e.g., 12345678). It is assigned by ANAF and used for tax identification. All companies in Romania have a CUI.

CIF (Fiscal Identification Code)

CIF = CUI with the prefix "RO" (e.g., RO12345678). It is used only for companies registered as VAT payers. If a company is not a VAT payer, its CIF is identical to its CUI.

Registration Number (Order number in the Trade Register)

Format: J40/1234/2020 (county/number/year). It is assigned by the Trade Register Office and identifies the company legally. Do not confuse it with the CUI, which is fiscal.

Where to find a company's CUI?

1. On invoices — the CUI appears mandatory on any invoice issued by the company.
2. Registration certificate — the document issued by the Trade Register upon company establishment.
3. ANAF website — on anaf.ro you can search for information about any company using the CUI.
4. Trade Register (ONRC) — on onrc.ro you can search for companies by name or CUI.
5. On the company's website — many companies display the CUI in the footer or on the contact page.
