What is EURIBOR and why it matters

What is EURIBOR? EURIBOR (Euro Interbank Offered Rate) is the average interest rate at which eurozone banks lend to each other on the interbank market. It is calculated and published daily by EMMI (European Money Markets Institute) based in Brussels, using quotes from a panel of top-tier European banks.

What maturities are available? EURIBOR is published for 5 maturities: 1 week (1W), 1 month (1M), 3 months (3M), 6 months (6M), and 12 months (12M). The most commonly used for EUR mortgages is EURIBOR 3M or 6M.

Why does it matter for Romania? Many Romanians have euro-denominated mortgages. The monthly payment on these loans = EURIBOR + the bank's fixed margin. When EURIBOR falls, the monthly payment decreases proportionally. Conversely, a rise in EURIBOR increases the monthly payment.

Who influences EURIBOR? The ECB (European Central Bank) indirectly influences EURIBOR through its monetary policy rate. When the ECB lowers the interest rate, EURIBOR tends to fall. ECB decisions are influenced by inflation, economic growth, and financial stability in the eurozone.

EURIBOR vs ROBOR:

EURIBOR is generally lower than ROBOR, as the eurozone has lower inflation and a more liquid interbank market.
EUR loans carry currency risk: if the RON depreciates against the EUR, the monthly payment in RON increases even if EURIBOR remains constant.
Romanian banks' margins for EUR loans are typically between 1.5% and 2.5%, lower than margins for RON loans.
In 2026, EURIBOR (~2.35%) is significantly lower than ROBOR 3M (~5.9%) or IRCC (~5.8%), but currency risk may offset this difference.
