How Bank Deposit Interest Works in Romania
Bank deposit is a savings instrument where you deposit a sum of money with a bank for a fixed period in exchange for interest. In Romania, RON deposits are guaranteed by the Bank Deposit Guarantee Fund (FGDB) up to the equivalent of EUR 100,000 per depositor, per bank.
Interest tax is 10% of the gross interest earned, withheld at source by the bank. This tax rate has been in effect since 2023 (previously 10% since 2016, with a brief 5% period in 2015). You do not need to separately declare this interest to ANAF — the bank handles the withholding and remittance of the tax.
Interest capitalization (compound interest) means that the interest earned is added to the deposit amount and itself generates interest in the next period. This "interest on interest" effect increases the effective yield of the deposit, especially over long periods.
Simple vs. compound interest: With simple interest, interest is calculated only on the initial amount. With compound interest (monthly capitalization), interest is calculated on the updated balance each month, leading to higher earnings.
