About Rand sud-african (ZAR)

The South African rand (ZAR) is the currency of the Republic of South Africa, introduced in 1961. Banknotes feature Nelson Mandela on the obverse and the five iconic animals (Big Five: lion, elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, buffalo) on the reverse. The rand is also legal tender in Eswatini, Lesotho, and Namibia through the Common Monetary Area. It is a commodity currency, sensitive to gold and platinum prices, being the most traded African currency but volatile.

Import (entry into Romania)

South Africa limits cash in rand to 25,000 ZAR and foreign currency to the equivalent of ~10,000 USD without declaration. South Africa is outside the EU.

When leaving South Africa, the same limits apply (25,000 ZAR / ~10,000 USD). At EU external borders, a declaration of 10,000 EUR equivalent is required.

EU EU rules

South Africa is a third territory — mandatory declaration at EU external borders (10,000 EUR equivalent).

General EU rule: Any person entering or leaving the EU with cash amounts of 10,000 EUR or equivalent must declare them at customs (EU Regulation 2018/1672). Non-declaration can lead to confiscation of the amount and fines.
