The US dollar (USD) is the most traded currency in the world and the primary global reserve currency. Issued by the Federal Reserve, the dollar dominates international trade, the oil market, and the global financial system. Its ISO 4217 code is USD, and its symbol is $. The dollar is important for Romania through trade with the US and the pricing of commodities quoted in USD.

Import/Export rules USD — Romania and EU

↓ Import (entry into Romania)

Romania: The same rules apply as for EUR — amounts of **10,000 EUR equivalent** (calculated at the BNR exchange rate of the day) must be declared at customs. A traveler entering Romania with 11,000 USD must declare the amount.

↑ Export (exit from Romania)

USA: When entering/leaving the US, amounts of **$10,000 or equivalent** (including other currencies) must be declared to CBP (Customs and Border Protection) using FinCEN Form 105. Non-declaration is a federal offense.

EU EU rules

The same EU rules apply: at the EU's external borders, the equivalent amount of 10,000 EUR in USD must be declared. Within the EU, movement is free.

General EU rule: Any person entering or leaving the EU with cash amounts of 10,000 EUR or equivalent must declare them at customs (EU Regulation 2018/1672). Non-declaration can lead to confiscation of the amount and fines.
