About Leu moldovenesc (MDL)

The Moldovan leu (MDL) is the currency of the Republic of Moldova. Although it shares the same name as the Romanian leu, they are distinct currencies. Moldova is not an EU member (candidate since 2022). The MDL/RON exchange rate is important for cross-border trade and diaspora remittances.

Import/Export rules MDL — Romania and EU

Import (entry into Romania)

Moldova is not in the EU. At the Romania-Moldova border, amounts equivalent to 10,000 EUR must be declared to customs.

Export (exit from Romania)

When leaving Moldova, amounts exceeding 10,000 EUR equivalent must be declared to Moldovan customs.

EU EU rules

Moldova is a third country. Mandatory declaration at EU external borders.

General EU rule: Any person entering or leaving the EU with cash amounts of 10,000 EUR or equivalent must declare them at customs (EU Regulation 2018/1672). Non-declaration can lead to confiscation of the amount and fines.
