Import/Export rules GBP — Romania and EU

Import (entry into Romania)

Romania: Same EU rules — the equivalent of 10,000 EUR in GBP must be declared at customs. After Brexit, the United Kingdom is considered a third country, so customs rules apply in full.

Export (exit from Romania)

United Kingdom: When entering/leaving the UK, amounts of **10,000 GBP or equivalent** must be declared online to HMRC (HM Revenue and Customs) before travel.

EU EU rules

GBP is no longer the currency of an EU state. Travelers bringing GBP cash into the EU from the UK must declare amounts exceeding the equivalent of 10,000 EUR.

General EU rule: Any person entering or leaving the EU with cash amounts of 10,000 EUR or equivalent must declare them at customs (EU Regulation 2018/1672). Non-declaration can lead to confiscation of the amount and fines.
