About Euro (EUR)

The Euro (EUR) is the official currency of the eurozone, used by 20 of the 27 member states of the European Union. It was introduced in 1999 as a virtual currency and in 2002 as physical banknotes and coins. It is the second most traded currency in the world after the US dollar. The EUR/RON exchange rate is the most important currency pair for Romania, used in trade, mortgage loans, and daily transactions.

How to recognize counterfeit banknotes of EUR

1
Touch: Genuine banknotes have a distinct, slightly rough texture. The letters BCE, ECB, and the denomination value are embossed.
2
Watermark: Hold the banknote up to the light — you will see the portrait of Europa and the denomination value.
3
Holographic strip: On 5-20 EUR banknotes there is a silver holographic strip. On 50-500 EUR banknotes, a holographic patch.
4
Emerald green number: On the front of the banknote, the shiny number changes color from emerald green to deep blue when you tilt the banknote.
5
Portrait window (Europa series): New banknotes have a transparent window with the portrait of Europa, visible on both sides.
6
Microprinting: With a magnifying glass, check the small text on the banknote — it should be clear, without blurred edges.
7
UV: Under ultraviolet light, the colored fibers in the paper become fluorescent, and the banknote does not glow uniformly.
Important: If you suspect you have a counterfeit banknote, do not try to use it. Take it to the nearest bank or police station.

Import/Export rules EUR — Romania and EU

Import (entry into Romania)

Romania: You may bring any amount of EUR into Romania without a legal limit. However, amounts of **10,000 EUR or equivalent** (cash + negotiable instruments) must be **declared to customs** in accordance with EU Regulation 2018/1672. Failure to comply with the declaration obligation may result in confiscation of the amount and fines.

Export (exit from Romania)

Romania/EU: When leaving Romania or the EU, amounts of **10,000 EUR or equivalent** must be declared. Within the EU (between member states) there are no customs controls, but authorities may request justification for large sums during anti-money laundering checks.

EU EU rules

Within the EU, capital movement is free. There are no legal limits for bank transfers or card payments. The **10,000 EUR** restriction applies only to cash at the EU's external borders.

General EU rule: Any person entering or leaving the EU with cash amounts of 10,000 EUR or equivalent must declare them at customs (EU Regulation 2018/1672). Non-declaration can lead to confiscation of the amount and fines.
