About Dolar australian (AUD)

The Australian dollar (AUD) is the currency of Australia, introduced in 1966 to replace the Australian pound. Australia was a pioneer in polymer banknotes, launching the world's first plastic banknote in 1988. AUD is one of the most traded currencies globally (ranked in the top 5 by BIS) and is considered a commodity currency, closely tied to exports of iron ore, coal, and gold. The exchange rate is freely floating, managed by the RBA.

How to recognize counterfeit banknotes of AUD

1
Polymer substrate: The banknote is made of plastic, not paper — flexible and tear-resistant.
2
Transparent window: Clear area with embossed images and variable optical elements.
3
Microtext: Tiny text legible only with a magnifying glass, integrated into the design.
4
UV: Fluorescent elements and the serial number glow under ultraviolet light.
Important: If you suspect you have a counterfeit banknote, do not try to use it. Take it to the nearest bank or police station.

Import/Export rules AUD — Romania and EU

Import (entry into Romania)

Australia does not limit the amount of cash imported, but amounts over 10,000 AUD equivalent must be declared to the Australian Border Force. Australia is outside the EU.

Export (exit from Romania)

When leaving Australia, the same declaration threshold of 10,000 AUD equivalent applies. At EU external borders, declaration of 10,000 EUR equivalent is required.

EU EU rules

Australia is a third territory — mandatory declaration at EU external borders (10,000 EUR equivalent).

General EU rule: Any person entering or leaving the EU with cash amounts of 10,000 EUR or equivalent must declare them at customs (EU Regulation 2018/1672). Non-declaration can lead to confiscation of the amount and fines.
